Nova Scotia Officially Bans Plastic Bags

It’s time to either start stocking up on plastic bags or as we suggest, invest in some reusable grocery bags! Stores across Nova Scotia are getting ready to phase out plastic bags.

Before the end of the Legislature sitting, the Provincial Government passed a bill to bring the end of single use plastic bags.  This means the end to the traditional “Sobey’s Bag”.

Nova Scotia becomes the second province in Canada to ban the use of single plastic bags, following Prince Edward Island’s lead. It should be noted that some cities and towns across the country have already banned single use plastic bags.

The ban comes into affect one year from now, but stores can phase out the use of plastic bags before then if they desire. Sobey’s had already announced that they would phase out plastic bags by the end of January 2020.

Some aren’t on board with the move to ban the bags though. Alberta’s Premier, Jason Kenny said it was a meaningless symbolic gesture.  But, to counter that Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Government has said that Canada will move to ban single use plastic bags as early as 2021.  This came after containers of single use plastic bags were shipped back to Canada by foreign countries who didn’t want our waste.
