Movie Theatres Can Open At 50% Capacity – But Don’t Expect To Eat Popcorn

Cineplex, Canada’s largest chain of movie theatres, reported it lost $227 million over the first three quarters of 2021. Their fourth quarter results will be released February 11, 2022.

Before Nova Scotia announced its reopening plan, movie theatres could only open at 25% capacity and movie goers were not permitted to remove their masks. That meant no food or drink could be served. Theatre popcorn, soft drinks and goodies were only permitted for take-out, delivery or in a designated area.

Under phase one of Nova Scotia’s re-opening plan movie theatres can open at 50% capacity and masks must continue to be worn at all times. This means if you wish to attend the latest blockbuster, you will not be enjoying your favourite movie snacks in your seat.

A Cineplex employee told us physical distancing has always been the company’s number one priority. They made the point, when sitting in a theatre with physical distancing, you are spaced out just as you are in a restaurant or bar.

Restaurants and bars can open at 75% capacity while maintaining physical distancing between maximum groups of 25 people. Wearing a mask is required except while seated, eating or drinking.

The Province says phase one of the re-opening plan is in place for about a month.
