If you are one of the many who shares your Netflix password with friends and family, you soon could be charged a fee by the streaming giant.
In a letter to shareholders, Netflix made the announcement that they have decided on an approach to monetize account sharing and they will begin rolling it out in early 2023.
“After listening to consumer feedback, we are going to offer the ability for borrowers to transfer their Netflix profile into their own account, and for sharers to manage their devices more easily and to create sub-accounts (“extra member”), if they want to pay for family or friends.” said Netflix in their quarterly earnings report. “In countries with our lower-priced ad-supported plan, we expect the profile transfer option for borrowers to be especially popular.”
The announcement on charging for sharing passwords has been a long time coming and has been talked about by the company a few times in the past. It looks like it is now a reality.
