Lower Sackville Man Charged In Hate Motivated Incident Involving A Woman Wearing A Hijab

Halifax District RCMP say they arrested a man in relation to a hate motivated incident that occurred in Lower Sackville on April 3 at approximately 12:15 p.m.

Police responded to a report of an assault that occurred outside a public library on Sackville Dr. in Lower Sackville. RCMP learned a man approached a woman, who was wearing a hijab, and allegedly threatened her after she exited the library. Police say the 21-year-old Bedford woman was not physically injured.

Police located the man after speaking with witnesses and reviewing security footage, RCMP safely arrested a 53-year-old Lower Sackville man they believe to have been involved in the incident. 

Although no assault occurred, through information RCMP gathered, they believe the threats were motivated by hate based on religion.

The man, who was later released on conditions, is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on June 26 at 9:30 a.m. to face a charge of Uttering Threats.

The RCMP says they take incidents of hate with utmost seriousness and condemns these criminal acts against any identifiable group.
