Grants Up To $1,000 Available To Patients In QEII Hospital To Cover Expenses During Their Hospital Stay

Being in hospital either for a short stay or a long one causes a great deal of stress for patients and their families. There is a financial burden when you are sick, particularly these days with the high cost of living.

The QEII Foundation with the help of its donors is looking to alleviate the financial strain on patients most at need. Eligible patients at the QEII Health Sciences Centre can receive a grant up to $1,000 to help pay expenses like rent, mortgage, lodging, transportation, home utilities, home medical equipment or medical supplies not covered under a medical plan while in hospital.

“We are grateful for the QEII Foundation’s commitment to supporting the everyday needs of our patients and their loved ones,” said Eileen MacGibbon, vice president of operations, Nova Scotia Health Central Zone. “As a centre of specialized care for Atlantic Canada, we know this fund will help improve the lives of families across the region.”

Healthcare providers or managers who are located at the QEII Health Sciences Centre must apply for a Patient Assistance Grant on behalf of a QEII patient. These healthcare providers include social workers, health services managers, physicians, medical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, oncologists, pharmacists, therapists, counselors, psychologists or psychiatrists.

“Illness or injury interrupts daily life, which can mean a loss of income, increased travel and strain on patients and their families,” said Susan Mullin, president and CEO, QEII Foundation. Together with the QEII donor community and our QEII partners, we created the Patient Assistance Grant to provide financial support to patients when they need it most. When someone is sick money should be the last of their worries.”
