The Halifax Regional Municipality plans to install temporary speed bumps at some intersections this Fall in what they’re calling left-turn traffic calming, also known as centerline hardening.
“Large intersections can provide an opportunity for drivers to take a wide left turn, which can be completed comfortably at higher operating speeds. This can result in dangerous conditions for pedestrians sharing the intersection.” says HRM on their website.
The intent of left-turn traffic calming is to reduce the turning radius of vehicles tightening up the path of which vehicles need to navigate to make a turn.

The Municipality says the speed bumps will be installed as an extension of the centerline in a manner to encourage left-turning drivers to make a slower turn by driving around the speed bumps and to approach the crosswalk at a perpendicular angle instead of cutting across the intersection diagonally.
Large vehicles such as busses will drive over the speed bump as required to navigate the intersection
