When you think of famous Nova Scotia NHL players, Al MacInnis, Sidney Crosby and Brad Marchand might come to mind, but one hour away from MacInnis’s hometown is River Bourgeois.
The small village is located in Richmond County, Cape Breton and when you enter River Bourgeois, the sign that welcomes you pays homage to the most famous person to grow up there, Left-winger, Mike McPhee.
McPhee was born in Sydney, Cape Breton, in 1960. Mike moved to River Bourgeois as a youngster and went on to play for Halifax’s Nova Scotia Voyageurs of the American Hockey League after being selected in the 6th round by the Montreal Canadiens in 1980.
Mike began his career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1984 and took home the Stanley Cup in 1986. His top year as a player with the team was 87-88 when he scored 23 goals and racked up 43 points. The following year would see him play the NHL All-Star Game.
McPhee spent nine years with the Canadiens and got to wear the “A” as Alternate Captain. He was a three time winner of the Jacques Beauchamp Trophy as the Montreal Canadiens’ most unsung hero.
Mike was traded to the Minnesota North Stars from the Canadiens on August 14, 1992. He would play 744 games in the NHL. He is a member of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame and the Cape Breton Sport Hall of Fame.
Mike and his wife Jane Anne McPhee reside outside of Halifax and have two adult children. He has served on the board of KidSport Canada, and Sport Nova Scotia. He has also been Campaign Chair for the United Way of Halifax.
