Sometimes social media can work magic, and in this case, it left a 13 year old girl who was losing hope in a Toronto hospital with a big smile on her face.
Shelley Kunkel posted on Facebook that her niece, Audrey, is battling and was losing faith with a disease known as Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). It is a severe systemic inflammatory syndrome that can be fatal.
Kunkel who said the whole family is from New Waterford, Cape Breton and living in the township of Uxbridge, Ontario were requesting Sidney Crosby, Audrey’s favourite NHL player to reach out to her.
Not only did Sidney reach out on Audrey’s birthday with a personal card wishing her well, he sent along a signed hockey puck and a lot of Pittsburgh Penguins merchandise.
“Thank you Sid and the Penguins for taking time out of your busy schedule to brighten Audrey’s day,” said Shelley Kunkel.
Also waiting for Audrey on her special birthday was a personal message recorded by Montreal Canadiens goaltender, Carey Price.
Price also reached out about a year ago to two children that lost their parents in Nova Scotia’s mass shooting.
