Tim O’Brien and partner Tara Unterrenier had dreamed of moving to the East Coast for a long time. The former Ontario couple finally made their dreams a reality during COVID-19 closures and shutdowns.
The couple also crossed another dream off their list when they won the $1 million Maxmillions prize on the December 10 Lotto Max draw.
“I called Tara and I said, ‘I’m on the way home and I have really great news to tell you,’” O’Brien said. “She didn’t believe me. It wasn’t until I called Atlantic Lottery and they confirmed I had a winning ticket that she believed it was real.”

They have played the lottery for many years and always dreamed of what could happen, but never believed it could happen to them.
“We never really officially got married, so for us this is a really big thing,” Unterreiner said. “My engagement ring was crushed and destroyed just two days before we found out we won, and I just thought ‘We’ll never be able to replace this.’”
The couple can now not only replace the engagement ring, but host a destination wedding with their children and close family members. In addition to the wedding, the couple plans to pay off their home and live mortgage-free.
“Since we’ve been here, we haven’t seen much of the province due to lockdowns and working,” he said. “We want to get to know the place where we are living better, so I really want to visit every lighthouse in Nova Scotia.
The winning ticket was purchased at the Beaverbank Needs in Lower Sackville, NS. The retailer receives a one percent seller’s prize.
