Halifax Landlord Reportedly Tried To Charge Tenant $600/year For On-Street Parking

A Haligonian posted to Reddit today stating their landlord attempted to charge them $50 a month for on street parking.

On street parking permits are required in some areas of the Halifax Regional Municipality. They can be purchased on an annual basis from HRM for $40 per year.

According to the Reddit user, the landlord confronted them after seeing them parking on the street and said the tenant was supposed to get the pass through them. The landlord claimed they only got so many per building. He said the tenant would be permitted to park this year, but next year to go through him.

On-street parking passes are available through HRM for residents of dwellings with 4 or less dwelling units. One pass per dwelling unit is permitted to be moved between vehicles.

The Reddit poster said that they met this criteria and applied through the city and got their pass. They are wondering if they must go through the landlord next year. The answer is no, landlords cannot charge you for on-street parking

Nova Scotia Buzz attempted to contact the tenant via Reddit, but has yet to hear back. We will update the story if we do.
