On May 10, the Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) received a report that a vessel came across a large, dead whale floating off Cape Breton Island. Two days later the whale had washed ashore on Scatarie Island as reported by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
The whale was a 56 foot male fin whale and was severely entangled in rope. The fin whale is considered special concern under the Species At Risk Act.

MARS was unable to perform a full necropsy due to location and incoming weather. With the help of The Province and Cape Breton University, the MARS team was able to reach the island and collect valuable images, data and samples.
