Many lower income Canadian households are set to receive a grocery rebate in the upcoming federal budget.
CBC News is reporting a senior government official says Tuesday’s budget will include the grocery rebate. It is designed to address the affordability crisis, in particular help with the rising cost of food.
The federal government will spend just north of $2 billion to deliver the benefit to 11 million households. The new one-time benefit will be delivered through the GST credit.
A single person with no children can expect a payment of up to $234. A couple with two children can receive up to $467 and a senior citizen can expect about $225.
The timing of the payments depends on how quickly budget legislation can be passed.
