As we previously reported, Netflix will be ending the ability to share accounts outside of your household. More information is now available.
According to a letter from Netflix to shareholders, the global streaming giant plans to phase out free sharing of accounts more broadly by the end of March 2023. Netflix had already been trialing this in Latin America.
Netflix says widespread account sharing by more than 100 million households undermines their long term ability to invest in, improve and build the streaming service.
The company’s terms of service currently limit the use of a Netflix account to a single household, but Netflix says it recognizes this is a change for those who share their account more broadly.
“As we roll out paid sharing, members in many countries will also have the option to pay extra if they want to share Netflix with people they don’t live with.” said Netflix to shareholders. “As is the case today, all members will be able to watch while traveling, whether on a TV or mobile device.”
What does it mean if you want to share your account with others outside your household? You will have to pay more. If you are using someone’s password and the account holder doesn’t wish to pay more, you will likely lose access.
How much more this will cost users and how it will be done on a large scale remains to be announced, but expect word to come from Netflix soon.
