A contest dubbed “Baby Grand” was announced on Pictou County’s Q97.9’s Facebook Page one week before Infertility Awareness Week. It caused many Facebook users to post their distaste with the concept behind the promotion.
The contest encouraged listeners of Q97.9 and Halifax’s Q104 along with radio stations in New Brunswick to “pee on a stick to prove you’re not pregnant” and then the “first one knocked up” would nab $1,000. “Pretty easy, wha?” said the radio station on Facebook.

According to a letter from New Glasgow’s Q97.9, Halifax’s Q104, and New Brunswick stations, Q103 and Q88.9 the contest was cancelled due to verbal harassment directed at staff members of a contest sponsor.
“This is the most unprofessional retraction I’ve ever seen.” commented Facebook user Desarai Mosher. “Not even an apology. This reads as, We’re not ACTUALLY sorry, but since someone harassed the sponsor location, we’ll pretend we’re sorry – but we want to make sure the public is blamed, not us for our poorly thought-out ideas.”
Adult-themed store Pleasures N’ Treasures, the sponsor of the contest was apologetic.
“Pleasures N Treasures has always prided itself on being a safe space devoted to inclusivity, empowerment, joy, and love.” the company said in a statement on social media. “However, this week we have come to realize that we have fallen short in reflecting the values of our establishment and are actively making an effort to do right by you.”
“We take full responsibility for these shortcomings and apologize to our customers and community for failing to see how our latest contest sponsorship could be triggering. This was not our intention, and we hope to learn from your feedback, assess our shortcomings and do better moving forward.”
