Perfect Storm Of Conditions May Lead To Coastal Flooding In N.S. – Full Moon + High Tide + Pounding Surf

A Special Weather Statement is in place for those living on the exposed shorelines of the Atlantic Ocean from Lunenburg through Halifax County. These areas should prepare for the possibility of flooding tonight.

Environment Canada says large waves, pounding surf and elevated sea water levels possibly exceeding high astronomical tide are expected.

They note the flooding will likely be minor, but it’s a perfect storm of conditions that may cause this to happen.

Tonight’s full moon will cause some of the highest tides around 8:00PM. The storm is also forecast to create dangerous coastal conditions coinciding with the high tide.

Use caution if you live on the coast and follow directions from authorities if given.

Environment Canada has also issued Wind Warnings for all of Nova Scotia. Potentially damaging wind gusts Monday afternoon into evening could reach 80 km/h to 100 km/h except in areas of Inverness County where a Les Suêtes Wind Warning is in place and gusts could reach 150 km/h Monday afternoon into Monday night.

Rainfall Warnings are in place from Lunenburg County east to Guysborough County and all of Cape Breton. Environment Canada says snow will change to rain and become heavy at times this afternoon into this evening. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall leading to localized flooding in low lying areas. Total rainfall is forecast to be 25-40mm.
