In response to the increasing threat of wildfires across the province, the provincial government has taken action to protect the community of Windsor by closing the aboiteau at the Windsor causeway. The closure is aimed at refilling Lake Pisiquid, ensuring a sufficient water supply for firefighting efforts and safeguarding the residents of Windsor.
The local state of emergency was declared by John Lohr, the Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office, under Section 12 of the Emergency Management Act. The decision comes as a result of the dry conditions in the region, increasing the risk of wildfires. Minister Lohr emphasized the necessity of taking every precaution to prevent further fires and protect communities during this critical time.
The aboiteau, which had been opened earlier this year in compliance with a federal order from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, caused Lake Pisiquid to drain completely. However, with the current wildfire season posing significant risks, the state of emergency directs the operators of the sleway connected to Lake Pisiquid to close the gates. By doing so, the government aims to maximize the available water supply for the ongoing wildfire suppression efforts.
A provincewide ban on open fires has been put into effect. The fine for violating the burn ban has been increased to $25,000. Officials urge residents to adhere to the ban and exercise extreme caution to prevent any further fires.
