Atlantic Canada: Not Sure On Masks In Class – But Satisfied With Provincial Responses To Coronavirus

Nova Scotia students are heading back to school on Tuesday, September 8. The Back To School Plan was developed while consulting with public health, the IWK Health Centre and education partners.

When it comes to mask wearing in school, Nova Scotia’s Back To School Plan says that the use of non-medical masks is not generally required within the classroom setting of a school.

For grades 10–12, masks will be required in spaces where physical distancing is not possible, such as hallways and common areas. Masks will also be mandatory for all students who ride the bus to school.

In a recent national web survey by Leger, Canada’s largest polling and market research firm, they surveyed a sample of 1,517 Canadians and found that 81% of Canadians feel teachers and staff should wear masks in schools and 65% said students should wear masks too.

In Atlantic Canada, where there are few active cases of COVID-19, only 48% of respondents felt teachers and staff should wear masks and 47% said students should wear masks. It should be noted the representative sample in Atlantic Canada was lower than other areas of Canada.

The poll also revealed that Atlantic Canadians are the most satisfied with measures put in places by their provincial governments to fight COVID-19. Atlantic Canadians said they’re 87% satisfied where as the national average is 80%.
