It’s Robbie Burns Day – Chances Are Some Drinks Will Be Had At This His Statue In Halifax Today

He has more statues in his honour than anyone except Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus. Robbie Burns’ words and poetry are still read aloud today. You have probably said, or sang some and not even known it.

His statue overlooks Halifax’s Victoria Park and if you have driven down Spring Garden Road, you have likely passed it. He even has a day named after him on the calendar.

Today, January 25th is Robbie Burns Day and it’s a good bet some loyal Scots will be toasting the famous man in Victoria Park.

That song you sing on New Year’s Eve is Auld Land Syne. “Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind. Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne.” Robbie Burns wrote that.

The famous Barra MacNeil’s of Cape Breton offered tribute to Robbie Burns in their song My Heart’s In The Highlands which echoes his words. “My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here. My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer.”

In past years, Nova Scotia’s Ski Wentworth offered free lift tickets on Robbie Burns Day to those who dared ski in the middle of winter wearing a kilt.

Happy Robbie Burns Day to all the Scottish in “New Scotland” who may be raising a glass to the famous man.
