The Halifax Regional Municipality has re-envisioned the format of Canada Day in close collaboration with Indigenous communities. KANA’TA: Canada Day 2022 will offer programming that honours the traditions of the Mi’kmaw Nation and celebrates pan-Indigenous communities that call the municipality home.
July 1st kicks off with the Royal NS International Tattoo Canada Day Parade at 10:00AM. The celebration moves to the Halifax Commons for Mawio’mi on the Commons from 11:00AM – 4:00PM. A Mawio’mi is also known as a Powwow. There will be dancing, drumming plus much more
You can visit the Canadian Museum of Immigration or the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site and receive free admission all day.
There will be a Family Fun Fest at Dartmouth Ferry Terminal Park (1:00PM – 4:00PM). There will be free family entertainment, live music, an attempt to break a world record for the most people drumming simultaneously and free maple cookies while supplies last.
The Dartmouth Sunshine Series free concert in Ferry Terminal Park takes place 6:00PM – 10:00PM. The big show will be the KANA’TA x Grand Oasis Festival free concert in Grande Parade. Neon Dreams and Crown Lands take the stage, supported by Drives The Common Man, DeeDee Austin, and Eastern Eagle. Free passes available below!
Fireworks: There will be three separate, community-based fireworks and pyrotechnic shows in Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford. A fireworks grand-finale will take place at the KANA’TA x Grand Oasis Festival. There will be pyrotechnic finale in Ferry Terminal Park at the Dartmouth Sunshine Series and a full fireworks display in Bedford’s DeWolfe Park.
