Small town Nova Scotia is home to some big names. Whether it’s Springhill’s Anne Murray and her four Grammy wins for songs such as You Needed Me and Could I Have This Dance to Big Pond, Cape Breton’s Gordie Sampson and his Grammy win for writing Carrie Underwood’s Jesus Take The Wheel.
A new name from Nova Scotia is making waves in the music industry. Nova Scotia’s Laura Roy was born and raised in Canning, Nova Scotia and has since gone on to recently gain two Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Pop Vocal Album of the Year for her songwriting contributions to Doja Cat’s Planet Her album. Roy wrote the music with her partner, producer Geo Jordan, and friend, Linden Jay.
“It’s been a bit surreal,” said Roy to Socan Magazine. “Not only are our names on the credits, but they kept my vocals on the track.”
Before the 30 year old was writing music for the stars, Roy was a 2012 grad of the NSCC Music Arts program in Dartmouth, NS and at age 19 attended Gordie Sampson’s songwriting camp. She has since made a name for herself in the music industry as an artist, songwriter, and producer.
Roy has also worked as a backing vocalist for pop heavy hitters Camila Cabello and Anne Marie.
Roy is now based in London, UK and her 2019 EP titled “Forte” won her “Best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year” at the 2020 East Coast Music Awards. She was nominated by ECMA for a second time this year for her most recent project “Tides EP”, which is an ode to her upbringing in rural Nova Scotia.
Keep your eyes on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards in April 2022 for Canning Nova Scotia’s Laura Roy.
