Trudeau Announces New Affordable Homes To Be Built Under Partnership In Cape Breton

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that the federal government has established partnerships with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Membertou First Nation setting the stage for the rapid development of 367 new housing units within the next three years. The initiatives are part of a broader strategy to stimulate the construction of over 3,286 homes in the region over the coming decade, aiming to meet the growing demand for housing.

“The status quo on home building in this country isn’t working. We need to build more homes and make sure they’re affordable – and we need to do it faster.” said Trudeau.

The Cape Breton agreements, established under the Housing Accelerator Fund, earmark $13.3 million to break down the barriers that have traditionally slowed housing construction. The Cape Breton Regional Municipality will benefit from the first slice of this funding, embarking on a mission to diversify housing options in the area. This includes the green light for constructing and allowing six units as-of-right in serviceable areas, and using pre-approved building plans to fast-track construction, from apartments to six-plexes.

“Today marks an investment that will have an immediate impact on housing options across the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. We are grateful for the partnership and support provided by the Government of Canada throughout the Housing Accelerator Fund process.” said CBRM Mayor Amanda MacDougall

CBRM will focus on creating affordable housing and reducing construction time and costs through financial incentives for builders, alongside efforts to construct more homes near transit locations and reduce parking requirements.

Meanwhile, Membertou First Nation is set to receive over $1.9 million to foster new housing developments and enhance infrastructure. This funding will enable the hiring of housing administration staff and construction managers to accelerate project launches. It will support essential infrastructure improvements, further contributing to the community’s growth and sustainability.

“The Housing Accelerator Fund will enable Membertou to build 28 new homes in our community. Thanks to this invaluable program, we will continue our pursuit to provide secure, affordable housing for our people.” said Chief Terry Paul of Membertou First Nation.
