Police Release Details On Why The Halifax Shopping Centre Was Locked Down Yesterday

Halifax Regional Police say they have charged two men in relation to two robberies that occurred in the area yesterday. A shot was fired at one of the robberies and three men fled from police into the Halifax Shopping Centre.

According to police, at approximately 11:00am they responded to a robbery that occurred at Ash Jewelry on Quinpool Road. They say two men entered the store and one was carrying what was believed to be a firearm. The suspects exited the store empty handed and left the scene in a nearby vehicle. An employee and customer were in the store at the time and left uninjured.

At approximately 12:20 pm Halifax District RCMP responded to a robbery at the Cash Trader Store located on Sackville Drive. Two men matching the description of the Quinpool Road robbery entered the store, one was carrying what was believed to be a firearm. They demanded money and the firearm discharged into the floor during a struggle. The store owner was uninjured. The two suspects fled the store with a quantity of cash and jewelry.

Halifax Regional Police officers spotted the suspect vehicle from the robberies traveling on Highway 102 approaching Bayers Road in Halifax at approximately 12:30 pm. The suspects refused to stop for police and continued to the area of the Halifax Shopping Centre.  Three men exited the vehicle and fled into the mall.

After a brief foot pursuit inside the Halifax Shopping Centre, police arrested two men without incident and found the stolen property. Officers secured the mall and continued to search for the other man. Police determined by 3:30pm that the man was not in the mall and it was allowed to reopen.

Daniel Christian Anthony Johnson, 27, and Colton Alan Grantmyre, 26, will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court today to face charges of:

  • Robbery (X 2)
  • Assault with a weapon (X 2)
  • Uttering threats (X 2)
  • Unlawful confinement (X 2)  
  • Reckless discharge of a firearm 
  • Careless handling of a firearm (X 2)
  • Pointing a firearm (X 3)
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (X 2)
  • Carrying concealed weapon (X 2)  
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm (X 2)
  • Possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized (X 2)
  • Unauthorized possession in motor vehicle (X 2)
  • Mischief
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

Grantmyre is also facing three counts of possession contrary to a firearms prohibition order.

Johnson is also being charged with one count of theft under $5,000.

The third suspect is still at large and described as a Black man in his twenties. He is approximately six feet tall, medium build and had an earring in his left ear. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a black hooded sweater and grey pants.
