The Nova Scotia Firefighters 50/50 Could Use Our Support – Lets Break A Record For Our Amazing Firefighters

As wildfires continue to ravage parts of Nova Scotia, you may wish to consider contributing to Canada’s largest weekly 50/50 draw. It takes place each week to support of Nova Scotia’s local fire departments.

“Nova Scotians love their local communities and the fire services that volunteer to protect them,” said Lt. Andrew Wallis of the Amherst Fire Fighter’s Association, who administers the weekly draw. “We’re proud that 100 percent of funds raised stay right here in Nova Scotia.”

Funds raised through the 50/50 have helped local fire departments purchase life saving equipment and more notably at this time, it can be used to purchase equipment that fights forest fires.

“We would like to give a huge shout out to everyone that keeps supporting our department through the Nova Scotia Firefighters 50/50.” said the River John Fire Department on Facebook. “With some of the money we were able to purchase some new Water Backpacks which help us fight grass fires.”

The online weekly raffle, conceived in 2020 during the onset of the pandemic, emerged as a partnership between the Amherst Fire Fighter’s Association, seven other fire groups, and Rafflebox, an online raffle software provider.

Since its inception, the province-wide fundraiser has consistently featured jackpots exceeding $300,000 and has successfully supported 269 participating fire departments and agencies. The largest draw to date was the Christmas draw in 2023 where Kayla Eldridge, an LPN from Falmouth, N.S. took home $1,467,620.

“The funds raised have contributed to life-saving equipment and other purchases that allow these groups to continue to improve their services,” explained Lt. Wallis. “We are extremely grateful to those who continue to support us and to Rafflebox for creating the technology that makes this possible.”
