Kennel Cough Spreading Rapidly In Dogs Throughout Nova Scotia: Antigonish Veterinary Clinic

The Antigonish Veterinary Clinic is sounding the alarm on Kennel Cough which is spreading rapidly throughout Nova Scotia. According to a post on social media, their clinic is experiencing a high volume of calls and visits pertaining to the condition.

They say Kennel Cough is transmitted through respiratory droplets and passes after an uncomfortable week or two. It is imperative you keep your dog home until several days after the last symptoms are resolved.

“Kennel cough outbreaks are not unusual, but this one seems particularly unpleasant.” said the Antigonish Veterinary Clinic on Facebook.

Signs of mild to moderate kennel cough include:

  • A sudden harsh, hacking cough that may produce white phlegm
  • Sneezing
  • Discharge from the eyes and nose
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite

Most dogs recover uneventfully but it can lead to a life threatening illness so it is important to prevent spread. If you suspect your dog of having Kennel Cough, keep them at home. Avoid all public spaces, dog parks and dog daycares.
