C’est l’Halloween The Classic Children’s Song Was Written In Halifax Believe It Or Not

Young Canadian students grow up singing C’est l’Halloween in their French classes over the years. C’est l’Halloween simply means It’s Halloween in French. That’s all the chorus consists of and the word Hey! a few times. The rest of the song features other Halloween themed words.

The song was written in the early 1980’s by Halifax French teacher, Matt Maxwell. Three years after penning the song, Maxwell placed the song on his first album, Comment ca va? Believe it or not… it was a hit. The album went onto become certified gold in Canada selling more than 40,000 copies.

“After I released the album, I just sort of jumped off a cliff and quit my teaching job and just started doing shows,” Maxwell told CBC in 2019. He ended up played thousands of shows at children’s festivals and in school auditoriums.

Today, Maxwell lives in British Columbia. The song is still sung in French classes across Canada, Europe and beyond.
