Environment Canada is advising Nova Scotians that hazardous winter conditions are expected in areas of the province. Winter Storm Warnings and Rainfall Warnings have been issued ahead of a storm moving in Friday night. It is going to bring a messy mix of snow, freezing rain, rain and wind. On Sunday, temperatures will drop and water will freeze.
A Special Weather Statement has also been issued for areas along the Atlantic Coast. These areas should prepare for storm surge.
Winter Storm Warning
Annapolis County, Antigonish County, Colchester County, Cumberland County, Digby County, Halifax Metro and Halifax County West, Hants County, Inverness County – Mabou and north, Kings County, Lunenburg County, Pictou County, Queens County, Shelburne County, Victoria County, Yarmouth County
The storm is expected to bring snow, blowing snow, an extended period of freezing rain and strong winds to these areas
Snow at times will be heavy and begin late tonight in southwestern Nova Scotia quickly spreading northeastward Saturday morning. Snowfall will be in the range of 15-40 cm then change to freezing rain for three to six hours on Saturday before changing to rain. Freezing rain will be most significant away from the Atlantic coast where more rain is expected.
Strong wind gusts will likely cause power outages Saturday and again late overnight Saturday into Sunday morning.
Rainfall Warning
Guysborough County, Halifax County – east of Porters Lake, Inverness County – South of Mabou, Richmond County, Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County
Rain at times heavy is expected in these areas. Environment Canada says the frozen ground has reduced ability to absorb rainfall.
The storm will affect these areas Saturday morning until Saturday night. It will begin as snow followed by a significant period of rainfall. Total snowfall will be 5-10cm and rainfall 25-50mm. Localized flooding in low lying areas is possible.
Temperatures will drop Sunday and pooled water will freeze.
