James Cameron Confirms He And Crew Were Drugged With PCP While Shooting Titanic In Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

UPDATE: James Cameron confirms that the story of him and crew being drugged in Dartmouth, NS is true. Video of interview below.

It happened just over 26 years ago near Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where the Hollywood blockbuster Titanic was filming. The night ended with cast and crew members including James Cameron and the late Bill Paxton conga dancing and racing wheelchairs at the Dartmouth General Hospital.

How did it get to that point? The most expensive movie of its time was wrapping up filming a present day scene before the shoot moved to Mexico where a replica of Titanic was waiting.

The crew was breaking for supper and the menu included seafood chowder. James Cameron noted once that he thought it was the mussel chowder. The official police report says it was lobster. Either way, within minutes of eating the chowder some of the 60 crew were laughing, some were crying and some were throwing up. The police report said the chowder was laced with PCP, also known as angel dust.

“The chowder was unbelievable. People were going back for second bowls. I really thought about going back because it was so good. And I think that was part of the problem: People ate a lot more than usual because it was so delicious.” Marilyn McAvoy told Vice in an interview. She was a crew member and stand by painter on set who illustrated Jack Dawson’s sketchbook.

James Cameron claims that night he was stabbed in the face with a pen by a crew member and he was sitting there bleeding and laughing.

“Eventually we all got put in these cubicles with the curtains around us, but no one wanted to stay in their cubicles,” said McAvoy to Vice. “Everyone was out in the aisles and jumping into other people’s cubicles. People had a lot of energy. Some were in wheelchairs, flying down the hallways. I mean, everyone was high!”

Who spiked the chowder remains a mystery. Halifax Regional Police investigated for 2 and a half years, but the case was closed due to lack of suspects in 1999.

Today, James Cameron, jokes that his future wife and cast member Suzy Amis who played Rose’s granddaughter, spiked the chowder because she chose not to have any.
