The Future Is Now: 90% Of New Glasgow’s Buildings Could Be Connected To A New District Energy Project

Today, it was announced that a feasibility study will design a heat network that uses renewable biomass and wind energy supplies to heat 90% of businesses and homes in New Glasgow.

Using local biomass to supply the network would mean that New Glasgow wouldn’t be dependent on imported heating fuels and money spent would support the local economy. Heat would be supplied through a distribution network of underground pipes also reducing the risk of outages.

Biomass would come from low-grade wood in the forest and in return benefit the local forestry industry.

The Government of Canada announced a $515,000 investment in TorchLight Bioresources to study the direct energy system. The Town of New Glasgow, the Federation of Nova Scotia Woodland Owners and other organizations have bumped that amount to $755,000.

“Growing the economy and protecting the environment are top priorities for our government.” said The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Member of Parliament for Central Nova. “I am thrilled to see important projects that promote both of those goals go ahead right here in our own backyard.”

Customers could save more than $800 per year on their heating costs if the system takes shape.

“Part of the solution to lowering GHG emissions while creating and supporting good jobs across Nova Scotia, including in Nova Scotia’s forestry sector, can be achieved through the use of biomass and wind energy as a renewable energy source.” said Fraser.
