William and Marilyn Parker of Dartmouth, N.S. are $1-million richer after winning the Lotto 6/49 Guaranteed Prize on the Nov. 14 draw.
“I heard on the TV that there was $1 million won in Dartmouth, so I thought I better check my ticket,” William said. “When I was looking at my numbers, they didn’t match at all but I forgot about the guaranteed draw.”
Mr. Parker checked the Atlantic Lottery website for the winning Guaranteed Prize number and after confirming that he had won, he shared the news with his wife.
“I went in to show Marilyn and I said ‘Guess what? Shake hands with a millionaire,’ William said. “It was a funny feeling really, nothing like that has ever happened to me.”
The Guaranteed Prize draw selection is a 10-digit computer generated number included on every Lotto 6/49 ticket.
“I didn’t believe him. I thought ‘Don’t be so foolish,’” Marilyn Parker said. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet.”
Plans for their winnings include helping their three children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The couple looks forward to travelling once restrictions ease and a Caribbean cruise is first on their list. Mr. Parker, who is interested in family genealogy, hopes to publish a book he is writing on his family’s lineage.
The winning ticket was purchased at Expressway Food & Video on Woodlawn Road in Dartmouth. The retailer receives a one per cent seller’s prize.
