Kaleb Dahlgren says he doesn’t remember the moment his life changed. There is only before and after. He remembers being on his hockey team’s bus on April 6, 2018, then waking up in hospital on April 11. Something happened between those dates that would bring a community and country together.
Kaleb and his Humboldt Bronco teammates, or family as he fondly calls them, were travelling by bus to their next Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game when their bus came to a crossroads.
The Humboldt Bronco team bus heading northbound would be struck by a semi-truck heading westbound. The truck had been travelling at about 100 km/h and ran a flashing stop sign. Sixteen of Kaleb Dahlgren’s teammates died and 13 were severely injured, including Kaleb.
“All I can do in this life is try to live up to the legacies they left behind.” says Kaleb.
Kaleb Dahlgren is coming to Halifax on April 3, bringing his Words to Live By tour and really looking forward to seeing everyone in Halifax. Tickets are now available through Eventbrite.
“I feel really blessed to be on this earth today to be able to talk to people & spread the word of positivity.” Kaleb told Nova Scotia Buzz. “The audiences & youth hockey players that I’ve spoken with thus far have been absolutely great & their feedback has been nothing but positive & heart warming. The players I was sitting with on the bus behind me, beside me, in front of me, are no longer here. I can’t explain why I’m here. The least I can do is to talk about my story & hopefully help others in the process.”
Kaleb is a #1 National Best Selling author for his memoir Crossroads: My Story of Tragedy and Resilience as a Humboldt Bronco.
“All I ever wanted to do is to play hockey again. I was grateful to be put on the York University team but I never played a game.” said Kaleb. “I came to the realization, I’ll never be the same again & physically able to play competitively again. I believe that my purpose to still be healthy enough to live on this beautiful earth, is to talk about my experiences & help young hockey players out there achieve anything they want to achieve. I’m in the process of getting my Doctorate of Chiropractic. I believe that if I can pursue my dream, anyone can!”
Discounted group tickets are available to youth hockey teams.
