Halifax Regional Municipality is stepping up its parking game with some high-tech help. The city is rolling out Mobile Licence Plate Recognition program to make sure parking rules are followed. Here’s the scoop: they’re going to use special vehicles equipped with cameras to quickly scan the licence plates of parked cars.
If a car isn’t following the parking rules, it flags a compliance officer. The municipality says all the data captured by the cameras is kept under tight security, and the only thing being checked is the licence plate.
By bringing in this technology, Halifax is hoping to cut down on the old-school way of checking each car by hand, which can be pretty slow and not always accurate. This way, things are expected to be faster and more efficient.
The whole operation is in the trial phase right now, with the team getting the hang of the new gear. But by June, it should be all systems go.
