Conditions are favourable for dangerous thunderstorms to develop this afternoon that could produce strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain.
“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.” says Environment Canada
Areas Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch:
Antigonish County
Colchester County
Cumberland County
Hants County
Kings County
Lunenburg County
Pictou County
Rainfall exceeding 25 mm per hour and higher in the thunderstorms is possible. Damaging hail size could be 2cm or more. Locally, winds could gust to 90 km/h or higher near thunderstorms.
According to Environment Canada “Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”
This weather event is forecast for this afternoon and this evening.
