Breaking: Fire On PEI Ferry – Passengers Evacuated, Loaded Into Lifeboats – PHOTOS

Correction: A previous version of story this stated the fire abord the MV Holiday Island was extinguished. As of Friday evening, it is reported the fire is ongoing at this hour.

There was an engine room fire aboard the MV Holiday Island Friday morning. The Prince Edward Island Ferry, which carries passengers and vehicles was close to PEI when the fire broke out with 182 passengers on board.

Northumberland Ferries confirmed the working fire earlier and that passengers were evacuated into lifeboats. No injuries have been reported.

According to Halifax Joint Rescue Coordination Centre the fire was in the engine room and the ferry subsequently ran aground.

Search and Rescue aircraft from 14 Wing Greenwood, and Canadian Coast Guard Vessels remain on scene. Eighteen crew and seven local firefighters are onboard.

The MV Holiday Island was experiencing technical issues yesterday which lead to departures being cancelled. No word if these issues were the cause of today’s onboard fire.

There is no word yet on the cause or extent of the fire. Search and rescue assets will remain in place to assist if required.

All departures have been cancelled for the remainder of the day.
