Popular Nova Scotia brewer Spindrift has rebranded after a trademark challenge by an American company with the same name.
Spindrift, the maker of popular beers such as Toller Lager and Killick Session Lager, is now named the Burnside Brewing Company.
“In 2022, we were approached by a US-based beverage company that shared the name to potentially co-exist in the Canadian marketplace.” said Burnside Brewing Company on Facebook. “That got our hackles up at first. After all, our loyal customers had grown to love Spindrift beer as much as we did. After some consideration, and with our no-nonsense spirit leading the way, we decided that this was an opportunity to create a name that better reflected who we are and more importantly where we are.”
In reality, as first reported by AllNovaScotia.com, Spindrift Brewing Co. was facing a lawsuit launched in 2021 from American company, Spindrift Beverage Co. who had been using the name since 2010. Nova Scotia’s Spindrift applied for their trademark about five years after American Spindrift. The legal action ended in 2022.
