Five Popular Halifax Pubs & Restaurants That Closed In 2020

The year 2020 was tough on us all. It was really tough on the restaurant industry with many closures and restaurant names in the news for potential exposures due to COVID-19.

From popular hot spots to waterfront eateries, here are a few highlights of the pubs and restaurants that closed in 2020.

#1 Stayner’s Wharf

To the surprise of many, the pub which was a bustling place in the summer months closed up shop in January 2020. It was located in Ferry Boat Lane just steps from the Halifax ferry terminal and was a favourite waterfront pub for many.

#2 Maxwell’s Plum

Known for it's cheap eats and "60 beers on tap", Maxwell's Plum is no more. Their website and social media accounts have been removed. The location is apparently due for a reboot.

#3 Red Stag Tavern

A staple in the brewery market, the Red Stag tavern was another victim of 2020.  It was a great place to grab a Keith's or some pub grub.  The bar had one of the more popular patios in the summer months. Located in a historic Halifax building, it over looked Lower Water Street and Bishops Landing.

#4 Chives Canadian Bistro

Chives was located on Barrington Street for over 19 years and closed its doors last year. They handed the building over to chef, Stephanie Ogilvie. She has since opened Hop Scotch Dinner Club.

#5 Rockbottom Brewpub

Rockbottom was located below the popular Your Father's Mustache. The brewpub was known for it's trivia nights and craft brews. The space wasn't closed for long, Nine Locks Brewery has opened a tasting room in the location.
